Are you an encouraging leader who is dedicated to keeping your crew and vessel safe at all times? If so, we have an opportunity for a Tug Master to join our team in Albany, WA, on an initial 12-month fixed-term 50% part-time basis.
This position is unrostered, and you will be required to work a minimum of 91 days per year (50% of the annual number of days worked by a full-time employee). Due to the nature of the position being required to potentially relief at short notice, preference will be given to candidates who reside within two hours of the operations or are willing to relocate at their own expense.

Reporting to the Port Manager, this position offers you the opportunity to demonstrate your leadership skills and take responsibility for the safety of the crew and vessel at all times.
What You Will Do
Your key responsibilities in this position will include:
  • Taking command of the vessel and its crew
  • Leading and motivating the vessel crew on familiarisation and compliance with the safety management system
  • Induction training of visitors, employees and other authorised personnel
  • Managing crew discipline, dealing with issues as appropriate and escalating to local management where required
  • Compliance with policies and procedures authorised by Svitzer and consistent with statutory obligations including quality assurance and ISM procedures
  • Participation in operational improvement exercises and liaise with local management on improvement of operational procedures
  • Supervision and assistance with maintenance as necessary
  • The preparation of operational reports as required
What You Will Need To Succeed
To be successful in this position, you will be able to demonstrate:
  • A minimum Master <45m NC Certificate of Competency or equivalent
  • A Radio Operators Certificate of Proficiency or Global Maritime Distress and Safety System Certificate of Proficiency
  • Statements of attainment in Provide First Aid (HLTAID003) (at least 2 years validity) and Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) (HLTAID001) (at least 12-months validity)
  • A current AMSA Medical and a valid MSIC or ‘Job Ready’ MSIC Application (or proof of ability to obtain)
  • Prior harbour towage experience and competence in operating ASD tugs would be highly advantageous
  • A commitment to leadership, and the ability to work as part of an team and build excellent working relationships with external customers
  • Ability to work under pressure, particularly in emergency situations
  • Attention to detail and ability to effectively prioritise tasks
  • Excellent communication skills in both verbal and written
  • Good problem-solving and fault-finding skills
  • The right to live and work in Australia
