Junior researcher in chemical engineering

$ads={1}

The LUT School of Engineering Science is looking for a junior researcher (doctoral student) in chemical engineering. The research is part of a project financed by the Research Council of Finland and the position is hosted by the Department of Separation Science.

In this project, we will develop an advanced gas separation technology with application to carbon capture through theoretical and experimental research studies. The theoretical part includes mathematical modeling, simulation, and optimization to understand the effects of individual parameters on carbon capture efficiency; the mathematical model is essential to evaluate the gas separation technology framework for other systems. The experimental research part involves the development and characterization of advanced materials and testing their effectiveness in carbon capture.

We are looking for a candidate with

  • A master’s degree (M.Sc. or equivalent) in chemical engineering (or, relevant related areas)
  • The ability and motivation to complete the doctoral studies within 4-years
  • First-hand programming experiences
  • Knowledge of MATLAB
  • Solid background in chemical thermodynamics and transport phenomena

In addition, we value:

  • Knowledge of characterization and fluid flow in porous media
  • Analytical and material characterization skills (FTIR, GC/MS, XRD, BET, ALD)
  • Experience with gas separation tests

Employment relationship and pay

The employment contract can be concluded only if the candidate obtains the right to pursue postgraduate studies at LUT University.

The employment relationship is fixed-term with a six-month trial period. The work will start in September 2023 (negotiable) with a one-year term that can be extended for another three years, provided that the studies and research have progressed satisfactorily. The job is based at Lappeenranta Campus.

The salary is based on the current collective agreement for Finnish universities. The typical gross starting salary for a junior researcher is approximately 30 800 euros a year (plus a holiday bonus) in accordance with the collective agreement.

Applications

The deadline for applications is 31 August 2023 at midnight, Finnish local time (UTC +3 h).

Please apply by filling out the online form and attaching the following:

  • A cover letter clarifying your background in the subject areas above (max. 1 page)
  • Your CV (max. 3 pages)
  • A copy of your academic B.Sc. and M.Sc. degree certificates and transcript of records. If the original documents are not in English, Finnish or Swedish, each document must be accompanied by an official certified translation into English or Finnish. Please note that for processing the applications, we also need transcript of records.
