The School of Science has a strong track record of excellence in teaching and research in the areas of Computing and Security, Conservation Biology, Ecological and Biological Sciences, Environmental Management, Horticulture, Sustainability, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics. We offer a choice of undergraduate and postgraduate courses and have active research programs across all disciplines. Based at the Joondalup campus of Edith Cowan University (ECU), the School of Science aims to maintain a high level of teaching and research achievements through the recruitment of new staff.

The School of Science continues to build capacity in the food sciences field and supports a proteomics research group with a focus on cereal grains, brewing science and food-related illness (allergy/intolerance).

The Role
The Research Assistant, under the direction of the Lead Investigator, will support a range of activities to the food and agricultural proteomics facility within the School of Science. Tasks will include the ordering of equipment for the laboratory and performing a range of administrative and research tasks to support the achievement of research outcomes.

Your responsibilities will include:
The management of equipment and facilities usage.

Preparation of standards and samples for analysis, analyse data and contribute to the preparation of reports.

Provide induction and advice to new users of the facility and take responsibility for development and documentation of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Safe Work Instructions (SWIs) for equipment and protocols.

Liaise with professional support staff, academic staff, students, contractors, and external collaborators.

The Person

We are ideally seeking the following experience:
Completion of a degree in Science and at least 2 years’ experience in mass spectrometry, chemistry, biology or a related discipline.

Experience in operating HPLC and mass spectrometry equipment, with a track record of equipment maintenance.

Demonstrated high level organisational and time management skills with the ability to prioritise numerous tasks with minimal supervision.

A strong focus on customer service.

Interpersonal skills with proven ability to develop good relationships and ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

Demonstrated written and verbal English communication, including the maintenance of accurate records, lab protocols, safety procedures, as well as substantial contribution to technical scientific publications.

Desirable

Proven experience in the maintenance and administration of a laboratory and equipment, including the coordination of purchasing activities, monitoring the laboratory budget, liaising with academic and general staff, students, workshop staff and contractors.

Knowledge of and expertise in protein chemistry. Knowledge of statistics.

Experience in using mass spectrometry and/or proteomics software.

Some experience in research administration such as assisting with the submission of grants, ethics applications and/or research/governance contracts.

Benefits & Remuneration
This full time, fixed term (two-years) position attracts remuneration of $78,854 to $87,624 plus 17% University superannuation contribution.
